Happy New Year!

New Year card

Art by Dany. This wasn’t finished until March of 2007 so pretend it says 2008.

D-Artography

Interesting little post on the current trend of Green and White here:

www.matthewgruman.com

Matthew is a Creative Person with some of the most clear ideas on design, both on the whole as well as personal approaches to it. He’s a fantastic human, designer, and musician. He is also has the largest collection of my artwork in the world.

D.

I’ve always said that Dany is incredibly insightful.

I Fail to see Another Option

Cobin Garrison, an off-duty 42-year-old firefighter, was walking in Berliner Park in Columbus, Ohio, in May when he saw a woman sunbathing topless under a tree.

He approached her and they started talking and getting comfortable, the woman smiling and resting her foot on his shoulder at one point.

Eventually, she asked to see Garrison’s penis; he unzipped his pants and complied.

Seconds later, undercover police officers pulled up in a van and arrested Garrison; he was later charged with public indecency, a misdemeanor, based on video footage taken by cops who were targeting men having sex or masturbating in the park. While topless sunbathing is legal in the city’s parks, exposing more than that is against the law.

Audio is Getting Worse

Over the past decade and a half, a revolution in recording technology has changed the way albums are produced, mixed and mastered — almost always for the worse. “They make it loud to get [listeners'] attention,” Bendeth says. Engineers do that by applying dynamic range compression, which reduces the difference between the loudest and softest sounds in a song. Like many of his peers, Bendeth believes that relying too much on this effect can obscure sonic detail, rob music of its emotional power and leave listeners with what engineers call ear fatigue. “I think most everything is mastered a little too loud,” Bendeth says. “The industry decided that it’s a volume contest.”

Rolling Stone.

If you’ve ever wondered why some TV stations are louder than others, it’s the same reason.

Dreaming/Designing in Green

I’ve been getting a lot of minimalist green-and-white designs popping into my head lately. I think it has to do with using Coda so much lately (their default icon is a green leaf), but I like to follow any (day)dream ideas through. My favourite ideas — for everything from songs to essays — usually start in my subconscious.

Green has been my favourite colour for as long as I can remember. My eyes are green. I’m a vegetarian. My powerbar is green. But, I usually avoid green with design. It insists on itself too much to be subtle, and I find it very overpowering when used as a base colour. In other words, I’m not yet good enough to effectively use green and I get no practice with it.

So, I made this site green — I think it works. Links are obviously links and posts are distinguishable from each other. I didn’t mean to make it green though — I started out intending to make it more minimal. But, when I was done hacking away at everything, the red started annoying me.

Green

From Color: Messages and Meanings, A Pantone Color Reference by Leatrice Eiseman:

With a multitude of greens so plentifully in the surrounding world, the human eye literally sees more green than any other color. As a result, there are many moods that green can convey. A majority of people see green as symbolic of nature and “new beginning” as green refreshes, restores and reaffirms that the seasons repeat in exactly the same sequence every year, always heralded by the emergence of the tender young green shoots in spring. An abundance of green indicates that there is available water — so necessary for human survival. As a result, humans respond on a very visceral level to the reassuring presence of green.

Overcoming Physical Death

From an ad in the Utne Reader:

OVERCOMING PHYSICAL DEATH

Until we learn what has to be done to stop REINCARNATION, we will continue to undergo round after round of physical death and physical rebirth with its resulting perils and heartaches of physical existence.

This book provides information as to what is necessary to accomplish the above, then to live a permanent, divine life — which was the original intention when we were first created.

Trafford is an on-demand publisher — you pay them and they publish your book. Kind of like the book world version of Café Press or the old mp3.com. That’s nice and all, but we already had to make ISBN-13, didn’t we?

John 14:12 says:

In all truth I tell you,
whoever believes in me
will perform the same works as I do myself,
and will perform even greater works,
because I am going to the Father.

– “The New Jerusalem Bible”

I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father.
– “Holy Bible” (New International Version)

Travis Dudfield

I was trying to think of something to say about all this when my roommate, Travis, popped his head in. He studied to be a priest during a period of his life and is a very good filter for Biblical manipulation. His reaction:

So much bullshit I don’t know what to do with it. Gave me a headache… that’s terrible.

Then we laughed.
