Don’t Buy Bush’s War

Over the past year, citizens have voted, lobbied, marched, and taken direct action to end the war in Iraq. Courageous soldiers have refused to fight the war. But Congress has appropriated billions of dollars to continue the war and appears ready to authorize a future military attack on Iran. It’s time for taxpayers who oppose this war to join together in nonviolent civil disobedience and show Congress how to cut off the funds for this war and redirect resources to the pressing needs of people. There is a great tradition of war tax resistance in the United States. When our political leaders have not listened to the will of the people, individuals have engaged in civil disobedience.

Netscape Navigator, RIP

AOL, the parent company of this blog and Netscape, has announced that they will cease support for the current version of Netscape as of February 1, 2008. Netscape, which at its peak in the mid-1990s held 80% of the web browser marketshare, and was a player in Browser Wars 1.0.

I have installed, and kept updated, NN on every computer — Mac and PC — that I’ve ever owned; but I don’t think I’ve ever actually used it. This must be how it feels when a goldfish dies.

Diving in the Pool

10 Metre Diving Board from Matthew Gruman on Vimeo.

The first year I attended UBC, in 2001, I lived in the residence closest to the pool. My roommate Greg had a digital camera. Near the end of the year, we had a party. Our Australian roommate was very drunk and excited. The next day, I had a conversation with a friend (who is now a cop):

Tyrone: I was at UBC last night looking for ______. There were a bunch of idiots running around the pool and jumping off the high dive.
Me: Really? What time were you there?
Tyrone: Around 3am
Me: Yeah, that was me and my roommates…

Final Foray

About 10 years ago, I recorded a song called “First Foray” with my new-at-the-time doumbek and my acoustic guitar. It was my “first foray” (groan) into multi-track recording: I used the double cassette deck on my stereo and bounced four tracks back and forth on top of each other. I think that tape is still in my Mom’s storage locker, but I suppose it could be one of those Black Sabbath or Metallica dubs I finally got rid of* last year.

Anyway, while I was learning to actually multi-track (from cassette four-track to DAWs), I re-recorded the song a few times — adding parts and re-arranging. I got pretty sick of it after this one, so I named it “Final Foray” (get it? Because it’s my final foray into First Foray? re-groan).

On a redundancy scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being Girl Talk and 10 being Chocolate Rain, I’d give it about an 8.

Warning: I’ve been told that it makes people nauseous if they listen with headphones because of the ridiculous panning.
