TravisJumps.com Redesign
I’ve been sick all weekend, so I made a deal with myself to actually relax and not do any work. Then I got bored.
I knew that Travis was getting sick of the design of his site (when the content is writing, overtly aesthetic designs get very distracting after a short period of time), so I figured I could set him up with a new one while still “not working” since it would be fun.
I started with the Vertigo Red WordPress theme by Brian Gardner which is nice on it’s own, but wasn’t exactly what I was going for. I got rid of the gradient that ran across the top, changed the titling typography and stuck a silhouette of Travis vociferously yelling/dropping an elbow from the top rope.
I also changed up the typography to make things a bit more readable. The original had little distinction between headers, and it was a bit hard to read. I have more changes to make (the solution I came up with for blockquotes is particularly bad), but it’s definitely an improvement over the original.
So TravisJumps.com looks more slick now and definitely lends a level of professionalism to the writing. The cranky old silhouette takes care of the smartass nature of Travis’ writing, and the design is a good precursor for where the site is headed. The writing is clear, and that’s important. Design is not aesthetics, it’s a way to present content in an appropriate way. I’m happy about it – thanks, Brian Gardner.
